Class Poem(40 years later)

FORTY SOMETHING

Forty years – a lot of time
Mother Nature’s not too kind.
It seems like only yesterday
We thought at Gaffney High we’d stay.
Forty years? That can’t be true!
Isn’t there a 16 year old inside of you?
I use 2 mirrors – first one and then the other
And realize – my Gawd! I’ve become my mother!
Extra skin has become so bold
I think I’m growing a ten year old!
The exterior is trying hard to hide
The ’64 graduate that lives inside.
My body creaks and I tend to moan
‘Cause everything hurts – muscles and bone.
The bags I carry are under my eyes
And I’m not even going to mention my thighs.
The hair is probably silver but who can tell?
As long as Clairol is on sale.
If I’d know I be as old as a tree
I would have taken better care of me.
But all this is fine because I’ve found
Any day is a good day if I’m above ground.
I can’t wait to see you, friends and guests
My high school years were the best.
To visit again and reminisce
Maybe talk about boys we never kissed!
The memories of the Tastee-Freeze
The football games, thank you and please.
Black and gold, Sadie Hawkins Day
Princess phones – I wish they had stayed!
Pep meetings, Coach Prevatte
“It don’t get no better’n that!”
Twenty-five cent gas and hamburgers, too
Forty years ago – Can’t be true!
Thinking of our reunion and seeing everyone
Aren’t we going to have such fun?
The memories are special as old friends
Bet you thought this poem would never end!

See you in October.
